MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – A day after Adam Davis put forth a shutdown performance for the Blue Hens on the mound, freshman Colman Vila tossed his own season-saving gem for the University of Delaware baseball team as UD defeated Elon 4-1 Friday at the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament at The Ballpark at Patriots Point.
Jim Sherman. “At the plate we had some really good at-bats and Taylor Mahoney got some critical outs at the end when Elon could have put together a rally.”Vila, who gave up the game-winning hit in UD's 7-6 loss to Elon (25-29) on Wednesday, exacted some personal revenge on the Phoenix as the southpaw went 7.1 innings and allowed just one hit and one earned run.
“I felt strong for the first five innings,” said Vila. “I was struggling a little bit in the last few, but my teammates made great plays behind me.”
The freshman did not surrender a hit until Elon's Nick Zammarelli recorded a base hit in the seventh inning.
Both teams went scoreless in the first two frames before Zach Lopes grounded into a double play in the third inning that scored Brock Niggebrugge.
The Blue Hens (25-23) then added to their lead in the fifth when Ty Warrington led the inning off with a double and eventually scored on an Elon throwing error. UD scored another run in the frame when Norm Donkin ripped a single up the middle to give the Hens a 3-0 lead.
Delaware concluded its scoring with a Tyler Dean RBI in the sixth inning.
The Phoenix was able to put two runners on base in the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings, but Vila and Mahoney pitched their way out of those jams and allowed Elon to score just one run.
Vila was pulled with one out in the eighth and Mahoney came on to record the final five outs and post his third save of the season.
Four Blue Hens led the team with two hits each, while Dean and Donkin each registered an RBI in the win.
Delaware will take on Northeastern in another elimination game at 5 p.m. The winner of that game will square off with the loser of this afternoon's UNCW-College of Charleston contest Saturday morning.
