Box Score
WILMINGTON, N.C. – The University of Delaware baseball team was unable to salvage a win in the series finale as UNCW completed the sweep of the Blue Hens with a 12-2 win Sunday in a Colonial Athletic Association tilt.
Jim ShermanZach Shields put UNCW (33-12, 15-3 CAA) in the lead in the first with a two-run home run. Both teams then went scoreless in the second before Casey Golden and Gavin Stupienski knocked in a run in the third. UNCW recorded another run in the frame on a passed ball to give the Seahawks an early 5-0 lead.
Delaware (18-20, 7-11 CAA) was able to put two runs on the board in the fifth when a Norm Donkin groundball to second base resulted in a UNCW fielding error. The pair of runs cut the Seahawk lead to 5-2, but that would be as close as the Hens would get as UNCW answered UD with four runs in the fifth and three runs in the sixth to put the contest out of reach.
The Seahawks scoring in the fifth was highlighted by a Luke Dunlap RBI double, while Corey Dick's two-run home run powered UNCW's sixth inning.
Zach Lopes continued his hot hitting Sunday as the senior posted two of Delaware's five total hits. Tyler Dean, Tyler Powell, and Calvin Scott each supplied one hit in the defeat.
Blue Hen starter Chad Martin was chased after 2.2 innings as the right-hander surrendered five runs on five hits and allowed four walks in the loss. Martin has a 2-4 record and has given up at least four earned runs in six of his last eight starts.
Delaware will return to action Tuesday as the Hens travel to Saint Joseph's for their final nonconference game of the season. UD will then resume its CAA schedule with a three-game series at Elon beginning Friday.
