NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware men's soccer team will play nine home games and take on perennial power Maryland in a late season non-conference match as the Blue Hens announced their 2015 schedule on Wednesday.
Delaware is looking to build on its impressive 2014 campaign in which the Blue Hens rose as high as No. 11 in the national rankings, tied for second in school history with 13 victories, and hosted the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament after tying for first place in the league standings.
Ian HennessyUD will then play a pair of road contests at Big East opponents, taking on Villanova on Sept. 5 before heading to Seton Hall on Sept. 9. Delaware welcomes Lehigh to Newark on Sept. 13, and following a road match at Iona on Sept. 16, hosts Columbia on Sept. 19. The Blue Hens then head south to face ACC foe Virginia Tech on Sept. 22.
Delaware opens conference play on Sept. 26 with a home game against Elon, before hosting Temple in a non-league match on Sept. 30. The Blue Hens make trips to the College of Charleston on Oct. 7 and Hofstra on Oct. 10, before returning home to face Drexel on Oct. 14.
Following an Oct. 17 contest at Northeastern, the Blue Hens will play a highly-anticipated match at national power Maryland on Oct. 20 in College Park. The Terps advanced to the national championship game in 2013, while UD posted an exhibition win over the Terps at Ludwig Field prior to the 2014 regular season.
Delaware then hosts two other squads that also advanced to the 2014 NCAA Tournament in UNCW and James Madison, before concluding the regular season with a road contest at William & Mary on Oct. 31. The home match against the Dukes on Oct. 28 will be a rematch of last year's CAA Tournament Final.
The Blue Hens will again be led by junior Guillermo Delgado, a third team NSCAA All-American and the CAA Player of the Year a season ago when he ranked among the nation's leaders with 12 goals. Senior Joe Dipre, who earned second team All-CAA honors in 2014 when he tied for the team lead with six assists, and junior Jaime Martinez, who ranked fourth on the squad with 12 points, also return to lead a potent UD attack that ranked eighth in the nation last season by averaging 2.05 goals per game.
