Brock Pleased with Progress as Delaware Football Takes Part in First Scrimmage of Preseason

Dave Brock came away with good impressions.
The Blue Hens scrimmaged for just over two hours in front of a crowd of nearly 400 who enjoyed watching an improving football team on a pleasant summer evening at Delaware Stadium.
“Our guys really competed tonight which was great to see,” said Brock. “This was as a clean a first scrimmage as we've had in our three years here. I was excited and really proud of the way we came out. We had about 115-118 snaps which is a colossal amount and we had the chance to practice a lot of different situations. We're excited about what we did and how we did it.”
Junior Blake Rankin and redshirt freshman Joe Walker shared most of the snaps at quarterback and each had varying degrees of success.
“Both of them did some good things and some bad things,” said Brock, who expects one of them to take over the top spot by the end of the next scrimmage. “They both managed things well and competed. They are working hard.”
Junior Eric Patton moved over from linebacker and logged ample time at fullback, breaking off several big runs, including a 20-yard touchdown run late in the scrimmage. Sophomore running back Kareem Williams also scored a touchdown and the Hens showed some razzle-dazzle on a short touchdown pass from wide receiver Diante Cherry to Rankin. Senior wide receiver Rickey Bell and redshirt freshman receiver Tre Brown also had some big catches on the night.
Brock was also impressed with the defensive effort that saw the squad force three turnovers, including interceptions from defensive backs Ryan Torzsa and Maurice Harley and a fumble recovery by linebacker Anthony Jackson.
“It was real fun experience tonight,” said sophomore defensive tackle Blaine Woodson, the 2014 Colonial Athletic Association Defensive Rookie of the Year. “We had a nice crowd and we competed. I thought the defensive did a terrific job. I'm just trying to help the team as much as I can. I know I have a lot of improving to do and there are a lot of things that I'm still learning.”
Delaware will take part in its second scrimmage on Saturday, Aug. 22, at 3:30 p.m. at Delaware Stadium.
The Blue Hens will return to an afternoon practice Saturday and take part in the annual Media/Photo Day on Sunday, Aug. 16, at Delaware Stadium at 3:30 p.m. Practices and Media Day are open to the public.
