CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Delaware women's soccer team will look to continue its early season success this weekend as the Blue Hens will battle Richmond and second-ranked UVa at the Virginia Nike Soccer Classic.
Delaware will take on the Spiders Friday at 4:30 p.m. at Klockner Stadium, attempting to open a season with three consecutive victories for the first time since the 2006 squad began the campaign with four straight wins.
Delaware will then face a major challenge on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. against No. 2 Virginia, which will be the highest ranked opponent the Blue Hens have faced in school history. UD has gone 0-14-1 all-time against ranked opponents, and has dropped all nine previous matches against top 10 ranked teams.
The Blue Hens opened their season last Friday with a 2-1 overtime win at Loyola (Md.), and posted a 2-0 shutout of Army West Point during their home opener on Sunday. Junior forward Natalie Zelenky was named the CAA Player of the Week on Monday after scoring three goals during the opening weekend, while Nikki Adams also has a goal and Maddie Brosler has contributed two assists. UD goalkeeper Kailyn Rekos has allowed just one goal in 197:59 of action while picking up both early season victories.
Richmond opened its campaign with a 1-0 home loss to Campbell last Friday, while Virginia kicked off its year with a convincing 8-0 home win over fellow CAA member UNCW.
The Blue Hens fell to Richmond in the teams' only previous meeting in 1999, while Delaware has dropped both prior matches to the Cavaliers in 1996 and 2007.
