Blue Hens Close Road Stretch With Four-Set Victory at Penn

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Chandler Bryant blasted a season-high 15 kills while Alexa Swann added 12 as the University of Delaware volleyball team notched a 3-1 victory over Penn Tuesday night at The Palestra.
The Blue Hens, who evened their record at 5-5 on the year, captured the match by set scores of 27-25, 25-23, 18-25, 25-14. The Quakers are now 4-4 this season after dropping their second consecutive match.
Bryant and Swann each committed just one attack error, as Bryant hit .500 for the night while Swann posted a .550 attack percentage. Swann also tied her career-high with nine blocks, as the Blue Hens held a commanding 17-3 block advantage at the net.
Autumn Jenkins added eight kills while Katie Hillman contributed seven for Delaware, which hit .271 for the night. Julia Anderson recorded 39 assists during the victory, while Ariel Shonk led the way with 17 digs.
Alex Caldwell slammed a match-high 19 digs for Penn, while Alexis Genske added 12 on the evening.
Bonnie KennyDelaware held a pair of six-point leads in the opening set, but the Quakers battled back to eventually knot the score at 24-24 after a pair of points. The set was still tied two points later, but a kill by Bryant and a solo block from Brooke Robertson gave the Blue Hens the early lead.
UD led for a majority of the second set, but after the Blue Hens were up 21-19, Penn reeled off four consecutive points to take a two-point advantage. However Delaware would answer right back with a four-point run of its own, culminated with a combined block from Bryant and Lauren Talley.
The Quakers won the first six points of the third set and cruised from there to get back in the match, and Penn continued its momentum by taking the opening three points of the fourth frame. But Delaware countered with a 6-0 run would not trail again, winning the final four points to put the match away.
The Blue Hens, who have opened the season with 10 consecutive matches away from Newark, play their home opener on Friday at the Delaware Invitational. UD will face Morgan State at 1 p.m. and Loyola (Md.) at 7 p.m. on Friday, before wrapping up play with a 12 noon contest vs. Sacred Heart on Saturday at the Bob Carpenter Center.

• Delaware's 17 blocks were the most since UD also had 17 in a five-set win at UNCW on Oct. 5, 2012
• Swann has 34 kills and just two attack errors over the last three matches
• Bryant (6) and Daria Robinson (4) reached their season-highs in blocks, while Jenkins added four of her own
• Shonk needs just four more digs to move into sixth place in UD history
• UD improved to 16-10 vs. Penn and defeated the Quakers for the second straight year
