NEWARK, Del. – For the first time since the 2007 season and just the third time overall, the University of Delaware field hockey squad has started the year with a 7-0 record after posting a 5-3 win against Bucknell Friday evening at Fred P. Rullo Stadium.
The No. 14 Blue Hens now have the opportunity to set a new school record this Sunday should UD defeat Pacific and open 2015 with eight straight victories.
As has been the case most of the season, senior Michaela Patzner (Rosenheim, Germany/Karolinen Gymnasium) and freshman Lisa Giezeman (Leidschendam, The Netherlands/Sin-Maartens College) led Delaware with two goals apiece.
Freshman Sabrina Rhodes (Middletown, Del./C. Milton Wright (Md.)) added her first-career goal while four Hens dished out assists on the night.
Delaware held a 4-1 lead at the halftime break and went up by as much as 5-1 with just under nine minutes remaining in the game before Bucknell (1-4) capitalized on communication errors from the Blue Hens. The Bison were able to come within two, but UD was able to seal the victory as time expired.
Sophomore Emmeline Oltmans (Baarn, The Netherlands/Het Baarnsch Lyceum) collected two saves for Delaware.
Kiersten Sydnor, Estelle Palandjian and Emma Fitzgerald each tallied goals for Bucknell while Shannon Keen picked up four saves in the loss.
“I'd like to compliment Bucknell for coming in and being ready to fight. We exposed ourselves in not executing our game plan and therefore created difficulties for ourselves. The nice thing is that we always talk about play and learn, so we are looking forward to learning from our experience today and being better because of it the next time around.”
