NEWARK, Del. – It was a defensive battle the entire game, but the University of Delaware field hockey team pulled out the 1-0 victory over the University of the Pacific Sunday afternoon at Fred P. Rullo Stadium.
With the win, the No. 14 Blue Hens set a new school record by opening the year 8-0. Delaware previously opening 1994 and 2007 with seven consecutive wins. The loss puts the Tigers at 3-4 overall.
UD controlled possession of the ball for the majority of the game and did not allow a single Pacific shot until the 68th minute.
Freshman Lisa Giezeman (Leidschendam, The Netherlands/Sin-Maartens College) posted the lone goal of the day, her team-leading ninth of the season, in the 28th minute off an assist from junior Marjelle Scheffers (Amersfoort, The Netherlands/Stedelijk Gymnasium Johan van Oldenbarnevelt).
Delaware had multiple opportunities for a high-scoring afternoon, but was unable to capitalize on 11 penalty corners.
Sophomore Emmeline Oltmans (Baarn, The Netherlands/Het Baarnsch Lyceum) collected just one save for the second full shutout of her career.
Savannah Burns registered Pacific's lone shot of the day while Laura Pujade logged seven saves for the Tigers.
“We learned a lot about ourselves today. We improved defensively from Friday and we saw some errors where we have to be more consistent. We tried to get a rhythm going with the corners, but we did not execute the way we should have.”
[On being 8-0]: “I don't really care what our record is right now. We may have made a new record in the books, but we just focus on what we can control, which is the next game after today. If we play good hockey, we could be 10-0 or 12-0, but we have to stay focused and not think too far ahead.”
Senior Captain Allie Mikelson
“Today, as a unit, our defense did really well. We were much better at communication with each other, being one unit, shifting together and overall working together. I'm really proud of our defense, we pulled through together.”
[On being 8-0]: “It's sort of surreal. We've never been in the position before, so we can't get too excited about what we've done. We need to keep our focus and keep things one game at a time. We try to live by the motto, 'any given day,' because you have to stay focused at the task at hand.”
Freshman Lisa Giezeman
“This was not our best weekend, but it's great to come out with the wins. We have to prepare ourselves and do a better job out there.”
