RICHMOND, Va. -- University of Delaware senior libero Ariel Shonk was named the Colonial Athletic Association Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday.
Shonk led the team in digs during three of the Blue Hens' four matches last week, posting 70 for an average of 4.67 per set. She helped the Blue Hens to a 3-1 victory over Penn last Tuesday before taking all three matches over the weekend to capture the Delaware Invitational team title.
Shonk (Atlanta, Ga./Riverwood International Charter) led UD with 17 digs in the victory over the Quakers, before recording a match-high 20 digs during Friday's three-set triumph over Morgan State. After adding eight digs in the 3-0 victory against Loyola (Md.) Friday night, she led UD with 25 digs during Saturday's five-set win over Sacred Heart.
Shonk now has recorded 1,606 digs in her career, and needs just two more to move into the top five all-time at Delaware. She currently ranks second in the CAA and 20th in Division I with a 5.20 digs average this season.
The Blue Hens, who have won four consecutive matches to improve to 8-5 on the season, open CAA action on Friday vs. James Madison at 7 p.m. at the Carpenter Sports Building before a 1 p.m. contest vs. Towson Sunday at the Bob Carpenter Center.
