CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The Blue Hen women's soccer team will open its conference season this weekend as Delaware will take on the College of Charleston on Friday at 7 p.m. before a 2 p.m. Sunday contest at UNCW.
Delaware went 5-4 through its non-conference schedule, including a 2-2 mark on the road. The Blue Hens are coming off a hard fought 2-0 defeat last Friday at Saint Joseph's, as goalkeeper Kailyn Rekos made four saves. Rekos is currently tied for fourth in the CAA with 34 saves and has posted a pair of shutouts.
Natalie Zelenky, Michelle McEnroe, Andrea Gunderson, Emily Market, Maddy Parker and Alison Slark have started all nine games for Delaware this season, while Zelenky leads the Blue Hens with nine goals and 15 points. Riley Curtin has dished out a team-leading four assists on the year, while McEnroe has added two goals and two helpers.
Charleston enters the match with a 6-3 mark, including three straight victories over South Carolina State, Charleston Southern and The Citadel. Raymara Barreto leads the Cougars with four goals and eight points, while Riley Narum has added three goals on the year.
The Seahawks enter Friday's contest against Drexel with a 7-3 record, and UNCW has won six consecutive matches. Carolyn Huddy has been solid in goal for UNCW, allowing just 1.41 goals per game with 35 saves.
Delaware has faced Charleston just twice in school history since the Cougars joined the CAA, posting a tie and a victory over The College. The Blue Hens are 8-6-1 all-time against UNCW, including wins in four of the last five matchups. UD recorded identical 4-1 wins over both schools last year in Newark.
