Blue Hens Drop CAA Opener To James Madison in Straight Sets

NEWARK, Del. -- The James Madison volleyball team spoiled the Blue Hens' Colonial Athletic Association opener as the Dukes posted a decisive three-set victory over Delaware Friday night at the Carpenter Sports Building.
Three Dukes reached double figure kills for James Madison, which posted the win by set scores of 25-19, 25-18, 25-20. JMU improved to 12-3 overall and 2-0 in league play, while Delaware had its four-match win streak halted as the Blue Hens dropped to 8-6 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
UD senior outside hitter Katie Hillman slammed a match-high 15 kills to pace Delaware, while Autumn Jenkins contributed seven and Chandler Bryant added six. Ariel Shonk posted 18 digs to move into fifth place on the UD career digs list, while Julia Anderson dished out 24 assists.
Janey Goodman had 11 kills and Meghan Niski added 10 while neither player committed an attack error for JMU, which hit .306 on the night and held an 8-3 block advantage. Niski and Bryn Recker, who also had 10 kills, each recorded a double-double for the Dukes, while Sarah Patterson had 34 assists and Taylor Austin made 15 digs.
After dropping the opening set, Delaware looked to bounce back in the second as the Blue Hens jumped out to an early 6-3 lead. However the Dukes quickly responded with a 10-point spurt and led the rest of the way to take a two-set advantage. The third frame was knotted at 8-8 in the early going, but JMU took the next two points and did not relinquish the lead.
Bonnie KennyDelaware remains home on Sunday when the Blue Hens host rival Towson at 1 p.m. at the Bob Carpenter Center.

• Shonk now has 1,624 career digs, and needs seven more to move into fourth place on the UD career list
• Hillman reached double figure kills for the second straight match, and for the sixth time this season
• UD freshman Brooke Robertson faced her sister Kelly, a middle blocker for JMU
• The Dukes have won five of the seven meetings with UD since the start of the 2012 season
• Delaware dropped its CAA opener for the fourth time in the last five years
• The Blue Hens opened CAA play against a team other than Towson for the first time since 2009
