WILMINGTON, N.C. -- The University of Delaware women's soccer withstood a flurry of UNCW shots - and the rain - Sunday afternoon and held on to post a 2-2 tie with the host Seahawks in Colonial Athletic Association action.
Delaware (5-5-1, 0-1-1 CAA) snapped a two-game losing streak as the Blue Hens tied the game up at 2-2 with 12:47 left in regulation and the two squads played two 10-minute scoreless overtime periods.
UNCW (8-3-1, 1-0-1 CAA), which had won seven straight games and was perfect in September entering the game, peppered Delaware with 25 shots but the Hens stood tall. The 25 shots were the most taken against Delaware in conference play since William & Mary took 30 in a 2007 matchup.
Blue Hen goalkeeper Kailyn Rekos (Groton, Mass./Groton Dunstable Regional HS) was outstanding as she posted a career-high eight saves to earn the tie and helped end the UD losing streak.
"Today's game was a classic," said Delaware head coach Scott Grzenda. "I thought the girls left everything on the muddy and torn up field. Both teams competed well and I'm very proud of the way we came back both times. We finished a couple of good chances and with the way we hit the post and crossbar, things might have been different."
The Blue Hens sent the game into overtime when sophomore Krista Trinidad (John F. Kennedy/Merrick, N.Y.) tallied her second goal of the season with just 12:47 left in regulation off a feed from senior Alison Slark (St. John's HS/Kensington, Md.).
UNCW got on the board first on a goal by Katrina Guillou 10:41 into the game off feeds from Maddie McCormick and Stephanie Bronson but Delaware came back just 11 minutes later to tie the score at 1-1 when sophomore Michelle Burnett (Annandale/Springfield, Va.) scored off a feed from freshman Riley Curtin (Hershey/Hershey, Pa.). The goal snapped a scoreless streak of 225 minutes and 33 seconds over three game for the Blue Hens.
UNCW's Guillou scored her second goal of the game just 70 seconds into the second half to give the Seahawks a 2-1 led but neither team scored until Trinidad's equalizer over 30 minutes later.
HEN SCRATCHINGS:
• Delaware, which had defeated UNCW 4-1 last year in Newark and was 3-1-1 in the last five meetings, is now 8-6-2 all-time vs. UNCW
• Curtin's assist was her team-high fifth of the season while Slark's was her first career helper
• The Blue Hens will continue CAA action next Friday when they host James Madison at 7 p.m. at Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium
