NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware men's soccer team stopped a four-game losing skid Wednesday evening, but the Blue Hens were still unable to pull out the victory with a 0-0 double overtime draw against No. r/v Temple.
UD (3-5-2) outshot the Owls (7-1-2), 13-4, and also held a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks at what was a rainy and overall dreary night at Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium. Four of Delaware's shots came in the overtime periods.
Junior Guillermo Delgado (Tres Cantos, Spain/Jose Luis Sampedro) led the Hens with five shots while Delaware held the nation's leading scorer in Jorge Gomez Sanchez to just one shot, his fewest this season. Gomez Sanchez was also without a single point for just the third time this year.
Todd Morton (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) continued to hold his own between the pipes as the redshirt freshman collected his second shutout in just his third start in a Blue Hens uniform. Morton picked up one save in the tie.
Alex Cagle accumulated six saves for Temple with no goals allowed.
“I think tonight was another great display against a nationally-ranked team. It wasn't a loss, so we stopped the skid, but for us, the magic is not just about winning, but how we play towards those wins. I think the fashion in which we stopped the slide was very impressive and I give them all the credit in the world for that.”
