Blue Hens Fall To Ole Miss, Host Wolfpack at NC State Tournament

RALEIGH, N.C. -- The University of Delaware volleyball team dropped a pair of three-set contests to Ole Miss and NC State Saturday on the second day of the NC State Hilton Garden Inn Cary Classic.
The Rebels defeated the Blue Hens 25-23, 25-16, 26-24 while the Wolfpack posted a 25-21, 25-14, 25-14 victory over UD, which fell to 2-4 on the season.
Katie Hillman and Chandler Bryant each fired nine kills while Alexa Swann added eight for Delaware against Ole Miss. Julia Anderson had 33 assists during the contest, while Ariel Shonk posted a team-leading 11 digs.
Melanie Crow blasted 14 kills and Nakeyta Clair added 12 for Ole Miss (6-1), which hit .371 for the match. Aubrey Edie led the Rebels with 39 assists and 13 digs, while Ty Laporte contributed 10 kills.
UD trailed by as many as four points in the first set, but rallied to tie the contest at 19-19 following a three-point run. The Blue Hens took a 22-21 lead after a Rebels attack error, but Ole Miss rebounded to win four of the final five points to take the set.
The Rebels took the first six points and were never seriously threatened in the second frame, before a tightly-contested third set that featured 10 ties and four lead changes. A kill by Swann brought UD even at 24-24, but the Rebels won the next two points to seal the victory.
Hillman, who was named to the all-tournament team, slammed nine kills against NC State, but no other Blue Hen had more than three. Anderson had 14 assists during the match, while Shonk contributed 13 digs.
Kaitlyn Kearney fired 12 kills while Julia Brown added eight for the Wolfpack (5-1), which posted a .315 attack percentage. NC State broke a 21-21 tie by winning the final four points of the first set, and never trailed during the final two sets to pick up the victory.
Bonnie KennyDelaware returns to action next weekend at the UNH Holly Young Invitational when the Blue Hens will face New Hampshire on Friday before taking on Boston College and Michigan State on Saturday.

• Hillman is now 15th at UD with 1,059 career kills
• Taylor Hollingsworth surpassed the 800 digs mark for her career
• Delaware had just one block vs. Ole Miss, its fewest since also posting one vs. Texas A&M in 2012
• The Blue Hens' 25 kills vs. NC State were the fewest since the opening match of the 2013 season vs. Pepperdine
• UD faced an SEC and ACC opponent on the same day for the first time since taking on Alabama and Clemson on Sept. 21, 2013
