VILLANOVA, Pa. – The University of Delaware men's soccer team was forced into a double overtime contest for the second straight game, but the outcome was not in the Blue Hens favor as Villanova came out with the 2-1 victory Saturday at Higgins Soccer Complex.
The Wildcats (3-0-0) recorded the first score of the game in the 18th minute while Delaware junior Jaime Martinez (Madrid, Spain/American School of Madrid) posted the equalizing goal in the 31st minute.
Both teams were held scoreless for the next 70-plus minutes before Padraic McCullaugh notched the game-winner to open the second overtime.
Freshman Blaí Palmi (Moixent, Spain/IES Dr. Lluís Simarro) collected a season-high nine saves for the Blue Hens (1-1-1).
Villanova's Will Steiner logged six saves for the win.
“We have a lot of disappointed young men right now. They played excellently and continue to improve day-to-day. Some of the possession and movement was terrific and given the number of shots and quality of opportunities, they are gutted with the overtime loss. You have to give full credit to Villanova, they had their chances and scored with it counted most.”
