Bonnie Kenny has announced that four high school standouts will join the Blue Hens in the fall and begin competing for UD in the 2016 season.
Maria Bellinger, a 6-1 outside hitter from Paramus, N.J., was an AVCA Under Armour Honorable Mention All-America and Max Preps Medium Schools All-America selection at Paramus High School. The New Jersey Gatorade Player of the Year and Newark Star-Ledger State Player of the Year, Bellinger led Paramus to the 2015 state championship. An outstanding student who is a member of the National Honor Society, Bellinger will join the Blue Hen program this spring as an early enrollee.
“I am thrilled Maria is graduating early and is coming to Delaware this spring,” Kenny said. “It will give her the chance to get acclimated to college life and train daily at this level. We believe that she will develop into a six rotation player that we can depend on.”
Julia Hayes, a 6-1 middle hitter from Union, N.J., was a first team All-Conference, first team All-County and Union County Player of the Year at Union Catholic Regional High School. She also was a first team All-State pick for non-public schools, and earned second team All-State honors for all groups. A four-year honor student who is a member of the National Honor Society and French National Honor Society, Hayes plans on majoring in criminal justice at Delaware.
“Julia is a good athlete who has all the tools to be successful at this level,” Kenny remarked. “She will give us much needed depth in the middle and will challenge for playing time. Julia is a giving individual with a huge social conscience; her work at her aunt's orphanage and school in Haiti has been incredible, especially for someone so young.”
Bailey Pearlman, a 6-1 right side hitter from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., was a four-year starter and first team Sun Sentinel All-County selection who led Cardinal Gibbons High School to the 2015 state title. An honor roll student who is a member of the Latin Honor Society and received a “Cum Laude” on the National Latin Exam, Pearlman will major in education at Delaware.
“Bailey has played a lot of successful volleyball in high school and on her club team,” Kenny stated. “We look for her to bring a wealth of experience and have the confidence to shut down outside hitters as a blocker on the right side. She will fill a void that we had in that position this past fall.”
Kori Rasmussen, a 5-9 outside hitter from Rolling Hills Estates, Calif., was a first team All-Area and All-Bay League selection at Palos Verdes Peninsula High School. A three-year starter, she was named Peninsula's Team MVP as a senior. A member of the Science National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta, Rasmussen was a member of the California Scholarship Federation all four years. She plans on majoring in nursing at Delaware.
“Kori is a skilled, steady, ball control outside hitter with a high volleyball IQ,” Kenny said. “I expect her to help us immediately with passing, defending and hitting.”
