NEWARK, Del. -- Northeastern dropped in five three-pointers in a five-minute span midway through the second half and the University of Delaware could never recover as the Blue Hens fell by a 69-60 score in a Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball matchup Saturday afternoon at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Delaware (5-12, 0-6 CAA) led 41-36 with 12:24 left to play, but Northeastern followed with a 13-0 run, which included three straight three-pointers, to take command. The Blue Hens never got closer than
six points the rest of the day and dropped their ninth straight game.
Blue Hen senior forward Marvin King-Davis registered his second straight double-double and his ninth of the season with 23 points and 15 rebounds but it wasn't enough as the Hens dropped to 0-6 in league play for the first time since 1981-82 when the Hens were members of the East Coast Conference.
Delaware junior guard Cazmon Hayes (below right) came off the bench to add 15 points, including three three-pointers, and sophomore guard Kory Holden (at left) added 12 points and a game-high six assists.
“I thought we did a good job of contesting their three-point shots through the first 30 minutes, but it's a war of attrition for us right now and our guys just wore down,” said Blue Hen head coach Monté Ross. “We were down 62-56 and missed three straight layups, which was due to our fatigue. We played the zone better today than Thursday (a 79-77 loss to Towson), and we'll try to play it better at UNCW."
Northeastern (12-7, 4-2 CAA), which snapped a two-game losing streak, got a game-high 24 points from senior guard David Walker, who knocked down 5 of 13 three-point attempts.
Senior forward
Quincy Ford added 18 points and eight rebounds for the Huskies while Zach Stahl came off the bench to add nine points, a team-high 10 rebounds, and a team-high four assists.
Walker surpassed the 20-point mark for the eight time this season.
The Huskies swept the season series from the Hens after also posting an 88-56 win over Delaware in Boston back on Jan. 7. Northeastern has now downed the Hens three straight times since last year.
Delaware took the lead for good in the first half on a free throw by King-Davis with 9:35 left and went up by as many as nine points at 26-17 with 1:30 before heading into halftime with a 28-23 lead.
The Hens kept that lead for the first 9:15 of the second half before a three-pointer by Gresham with 10:45 left put the Huskies up 42-41 and Delaware could never regain the lead.
