PRINCETON, N.J. -- The blizzard that hit the Northeast corridor on Saturday did not the deter the University of Delaware indoor track & field team Sunday evening as the Blue Hens posted six first place finishes at the Tiger Open at Princeton University's Jadwin Gym.
Although there was no team scoring, Delaware's six wins were just one short of the seven victories by host Princeton. Individuals from Monmouth and Rider also picked up wins in the day-long event. The meet was originally scheduled for Saturday but was postponed a day after a winter storm blanketed much of the East Coast with as much as 30 inches of snow.
In addition to the six victories, the Blue Hens also qualified for May's ECAC Championships in five events.
“I am happy we had the opportunity to compete this weekend,” said Delaware head coach Wendy McFarlane. “We wanted to qualify more individuals for the ECAC Championship and we did. We are getting better as the weeks go by. I am excited for the meets ahead.”
Sophomore Tyra Reid and freshman Carly Pettipaw each were in on two victories for Delaware as Pettipaw captured the 500 meters with an ECAC qualifying time of 1:16.57 and Reid won the 200 meters with an ECAC qualifying time of 57.25. Those two then joined Carolyn Darr and Michele Simmons to capture the 4 x 400 meter relay in an ECAC qualifying time of 3:55.02.
Also for the Hens, junior Tyler Jackson won the 200 meters (25.56), sophomore Liz McGroarty won the mile run (5:02.48), and senior Amira Idris captured the triple jump with an ECAC qualifying leap of 39-feet, 1/4 inches.
Idris also was second in the long jump (18-8), freshman Ashley Bailey was second in the pole vault (11-9.75) and third in the long jump (18-6), and Jackson was fourth in the 4 x 400 meter relay (4:09.26) and fifth in the 60 meters (8.08).
Sophomore Sarah Hillman was second in the shot put and tops among collegiate performers with a throw of 45-7.25 that also qualified her for the ECAC Championships.
Delaware will continue action next Saturday when the Blue Hens compete at the University of Maryland Terrapin Invitational held at Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex in Hyattsville, Md.
