NEWARK, Del. – The Blue Hens received 20-plus points from senior Courtni Green (Winchester, Va./Millbrook) for the third straight game Tuesday evening en route to a 67-63 victory over William & Mary at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Green collected a game-high 23 points with six rebounds and three assists for Delaware (10-8, 5-2 CAA). The guard is averaging 14.9 points with 2.7 3-pointers per game in seven league contests this season.
Freshman Nicole Enabosi (at left; Gaithersburg, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) added 12 points and seven rebounds while sophomore Makeda Nicholas (below right; North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) notched eight points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots.
The Hens held a 14-point advantage with less than five minutes remaining in regulation before the Tribe (12-6, 3-4 CAA) capitalized off of Delaware fouls from the charity stripe. A layup from Bianca Boggs with 11 seconds on the clock cut the game to 65-63 before Green knocked down two free throws of her own for the win.
Boggs led William & Mary with 18 points while Alex Masaquel posted 14 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Marlena Tremba registered 10 points, seven assists and four rebounds.
“I thought the kids did a great job of staying with the game plan. We wanted to get to the rim, get post-ups and put pressure on William & Mary's defense and I thought we were able to do that. In the second half, we weren't smart as we were trying to block shots and in turn we ended up fouling. They [W&M] got most of their second half offense from the free throw line. This young group needs to learn that we have to box out and play a solid defense.”
Senior Courtni Green
“It's always good to start the week off on a good note, especially with games at James Madison and Drexel coming up. We kept our composure tonight and played Delaware basketball. We knocked down big time shots when we needed them.”
Senior Alecia Bell
“We knew we couldn't lose two in a row, especially at home, so we did a lot of visualizing beforehand of how we wanted the game to go. It was key to box out, rebound and play solid defense. Even if they [W&M] made a run, we knew we had to communicate, stick together as a team and keep our heads in the game.”
