HARRISONBURG, Va. – Delaware opened the night with a 13-0 deficit and was never able to fully recover in a 75-55 loss at James Madison Friday evening.
The Blue Hens (10-9, 5-3 CAA) shot 2-of-14 from the floor and were outrebounded, 16-8, in the first quarter before going into the half with a season-worst 22-point disadvantage as the Dukes led, 45-23, at the break.
Delaware received a spark to start the second half as the Hens outscored JMU (13-5, 6-1 CAA), 22-11, in the third period and came within 10 at 62-52 with less than five minutes remaining in regulation. The Dukes then outscored UD, 13-3, in the final minutes to seal the victory.
Redshirt sophomore Sadé Chatman (St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Central) registered a career-best 15 points, including 11 in the third quarter, with four rebounds in the loss.
Senior Courtni Green (Winchester, Va./Millbrook) added eight points and four rebounds while sophomore Makeda Nicholas (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) collected six points, five rebounds and three blocked shots.
Jazmon Gwathmey posted a game-high 23 points for the Dukes while Da'Lishia Griffen and Angela Mickens both recorded double doubles of 12 points and 10 rebounds.
“We fell behind early and we were trying to climb the mountain the rest of the game. We have to be aggressive right from the get-go. We're shooting ourselves in the foot by starting games this way and with such a deficit. It's fun to play here, but you have to be mentally ready to play here. You can't stake a step back and that's what we did in the first half. You have to give JMU credit because they're a long, athletic team. They can contest shots, you have to have an inside game to beat JMU. You cannot be passive and beat them.”
Junior Erika Brown
“We weren't attacking and being as aggressive as we needed to be to start the game. We're a good rebounding team, but no one was going to the basket in the beginning, which meant we never had any second chance opportunities. Everybody had a lot of fight in the second half. We could have folded because we were down by so much, but we came out and were aggressive and looking to go to the basket.”
Sophomore Sadé Chatman
“I was probably the most confident today than I've been in a game so far this season. In the second half, everybody had the fight to get back in it. We have to play a complete game however, we have to fight from start to finish.”
