HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The Blue Hens were held to under 50 points for the first time this season as Hofstra defeated Delaware, 58-49, in the Colonial Athletic Association lid-lifter Sunday afternoon at the Mack Sports Complex.
After logging a season-high 21 turnovers at Robert Morris last week, UD (5-7, 0-1 CAA) registered 19 turnovers in Sunday's loss to the Pride (10-2, 1-0 CAA).
Junior Erika Brown (Paterson, N.J./John F. Kennedy) led all scorers with 15 points while freshman Nicole Enabosi (Gaithersburg, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) notched 11 points and seven rebounds.
Sophomore Makeda Nicholas (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) earned her second start of the season and collected a season-best 10 points, eight rebounds, three blocked shots and three steals for the Blue Hens.
Ashunae Durant, Kelly Loftus and Krystal Luciano each posted 13 points and seven for Hofstra. The Pride outrebounded Delaware, 39-38, including a 16-10 mark on the offensive board.
“We're not showing that we have the passion or fight to win a game. This group has to find something within them to get them jumpstarted. The coaches are plenty mad, but somebody with a uniform on has to step up, get mad and really get people fired up and ready to go. We're not playing with an attitude or edge right now. At some point, the toughness of our group has to come out. We have to play more physical. Hofstra really took it to us, especially on the boards. We keep challenging this team, but it seems like we only have one run in us when a good team should have several in a game.”
Junior Erika Brown
“We can't get down; we're tired of losing. We have to get back to the drawing board and find a way to win because we're capable of being every team in the CAA.”
Freshman Nicole Enabosi
[On first CAA game of career] – “Playing in the CAA is very intense and I've been able to sense the rivalry for the past few weeks. The past is the past and now it's a new season. It doesn't matter what we did against non-conference opponents.”
[On playing Hofstra] – “We have to learn from this loss. There's no reason they should have had as many rebounds and second chance shots as they did, especially since we're the bigger team and they play a lot of guards. I know I specifically need to work on boxing out and getting to the ball.”
