NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware volleyball team combined its academic excellence with its athletic performance on Friday when the Blue Hens hosted Most Valuable Professor night at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Each Blue Hen player was joined on the court by a professor who has made a positive impact on them academically, remaining on the floor for the playing of the national anthem prior to UD's match vs. William & Mary.
The professors who stayed for the match were then treated to one of the Blue Hens' best performances of the season, as Delaware rolled to a three-set (25-21, 25-19, 25-18) victory over its conference rival in front of 576 fans, the highest home attendance figure of the season.
“My professor was honored to be able to join me on the court before the match,” said Blue Hen senior co-captain Taylor Hollingsworth, who posted a match-high 17 digs during the win. “She was really ecstatic to be asked, and is someone I will maintain a relationship with in the future.”
“My professor had already been to three games this season and was honored to be recognized; he's also someone I will look to stay in contact with down the road,” stated fellow senior co-captain Alexa Swann, who blasted a season-high 13 kills against the Tribe.
“I really appreciated Autumn (Jenkins) asking me to attend Friday's match,” said Karen Edwards Ed.D, an associate professor in the UD department of behavioral health and nutrition who coached high school volleyball for over 25 years. “The sport has always held a special place in my heart, and it was awesome to stand by Autumn and her teammates during the national anthem. I'm so glad the weekend went well for the team.”
Delaware, which posted a thrilling five-set victory over James Madison on Sunday to post its second consecutive win, hits the road this weekend for matches at the College of Charleston and UNCW. The Blue Hens will play their final home contests of the year on Nov. 4 against Northeastern at 7 p.m. and Nov. 6 vs. Hofstra at 1 p.m.
