ARLINGTON, Va. – The University of Delaware women's basketball was predicted to finish tied for fifth in the Colonial Athletic Association Preseason Poll, as announced at Tuesday's CAA Basketball Media Day.
Additionally, senior Erika Brown (Paterson, N.J./John F. Kennedy) was picked as a Preseason All-CAA Second Team selection.
James Madison, the three-time defending CAA champion, was selected to win it all again in 2016 according to a vote of the league's 10 head coaches. Behind the Dukes (76 points) were Elon (70) and Drexel (68) while Hofstra (49) was picked fourth. William & Mary tied with the Blue Hens with 47 points apiece while Northeastern was seventh with 41 points. Rounding out the 10 teams were College of Charleston (19), UNCW (17) and Towson (16).
Delaware looks to bounce back from a 2015-16 campaign in which the Blue Hens finished 16-15 overall and 10-8 in league play with their seventh straight trip to the CAA semifinals. UD returns four starters and seven letter winners from last season while adding five newcomers for the upcoming year.
Brown, a four-year starter and a current team co-captain for the Hens, was second on the team last season with 11.4 points per game. She added a team-high 74 assists in addition to 2.8 rebounds per game as an All-CAA Third team honoree. A 1,000-point scorer, Brown is in the Top 25 of eight different Delaware career statistical categories as she enters her final season in a Blue Hens uniform.
JMU's Precious Hall was selected as the CAA Preseason Player of the Year after missing the entire 2015-16 season with an injury.
The league's television schedule was also announced at Media Day, with the Blue Hens being featured twice during regular season action on the American Sports Network when Delaware hosts Hofstra on Feb. 12 before traveling to Drexel on Feb. 19.
Conference play tips off on January 2 as the Blue Hens host William & Mary at the Bob Carpenter Center. All 10 teams will head to the 2017 CAA Women's Basketball Championship, held March 8-11, at the JMU Convocation Center in Harrisonburg, Va.
