COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Delaware senior Guillermo Delgado (Tres Cantos, Spain/Jose Luis Sampedro) broke the program's all-time goals record Tuesday evening, but No. 1 Maryland put the damper on celebrations as the Terps pulled out the 3-2 double overtime victory at Ludwig Field.
Delgado finished the night with two goals to up his career total to 48 and bypass Mike Biggs' program record 47 set from 1968-70. The forward now holds five UD career records in points (114), goals (48), assists (19), shots (277) and game-winning goals (17).
In the 23rd minute, Delgado headed in a cross from junior Carlos Perales (L'Alcúdia de Crespins, Spain/Colegio Claret Xàtiva) to tie the game at 1-1.
More than 50 minutes later, Delgado collected the rebound off of a save and gave the Hens (10-6-1) the 2-1 advantage.
Maryland's Gordon Wild had other ideas however as the sophomore netted his second goal of the evening in the 76th minute to knot things up at 2-2.
With just over four minutes remaining in double overtime, Wild collected the hat trick as the Terps registered their 11th straight win to improve to 14-0-2 on the year.
Redshirt sophomore Todd Morton (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) logged four saves for the Hens.
Cody Niedermeier recorded one save for Maryland while the Terps picked up two team saves.
“That is one gutted set of young men in the dressing room tonight. They took the nation's top-ranked team and the Big Ten champions to double overtime in a very entertaining game in College Park. It was full of drama in lead changes, penalty saves and late goal action. I didn't enjoy the loss, but I did enjoy the game. Well done to both teams.”
“I want to congratulate Guillermo on his two-goal performance tonight as he claims Delaware's all-time record. He is the highest active scorer in all of NCAA Division I soccer and now steps up as the top goal scorer, points scorer and assists holder in the 90-plus-year history of Delaware men's soccer. He picked a fitting venue and occasion tonight against the nation's No. 1 team.”
