PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Senior Guillermo Delgado (Tres Cantos, Spain/Jose Luis Sampedro) registered two goals Wednesday evening, but it wasn't enough as the Blue Hens pulled their first draw this season with a 2-2 final against Penn at Rhodes Field.
With his two tallies, Delgado holds 45 career goals and is just two behind Mike Biggs' program record 47 set from 1968-70. The three-time All-American is currently the NCAA's active career leader with 107 points and 45 goals.
Delgado tied the game at 1-1 in the 32nd minute with the assist coming from junior Carlos Perales (L'Alcúdia de Crespins, Spain/Colegio Claret Xàtiva) before giving the Hens (8-3-1) the 2-1 advantage just six minutes later. Classmate Thomas de Villardi (Vincennes, France/Lycee Notre-dame Guingamp) collected his third assist of the season on the play.
Penn's Matt Poplawski knotted the contest in the 52nd minute as Delaware entered just its second overtime contest of the season.
The Quakers (3-1-5) outshot the Blue Hens, 4-1, in the extra 20 minutes of play. In total, Delaware was outshot for the first time this season as Penn held the 16-7 advantage for the entire game.
Redshirt sophomore Todd Morton (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) stopped a season-high six shots in 110 minutes played.
Etan Mabourakh picked up three saves for the Quakers.
“Tonight's affair was as well contested of a game that we've had this season. I'm very happy with the quality of both of our goals, but in the end think a draw was a fair result for both squads.”
