HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- The University of Delaware volleyball team dropped a three-set match to Hofstra (25-17, 25-12, 25-19) Saturday afternoon at the Mack Physical Education Center.
The Blue Hens suffered their seventh straight defeat while falling to 6-12 overall and 0-5 in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Pride, which won its fourth consecutive contest, improved to 14-5 overall and 4-2 in league action.
Delaware senior Alexa Swann had five kills and hit .556 for the match, while adding a match-high seven blocks on the day. Freshman Maria Bellinger paced the Blue Hens with nine kills and a .375 attack percentage, while Daria Robinson chipped in with five kills of her own. Liz Tobey handed out a career-high 18 assists, while Taylor Hollingsworth posted a team-leading seven digs.
Laura Masciullo and Nanishka Perez each tallied eight kills for the Pride, while Hannah Klemm and Luisa Sydlik combined for 36 assists. Hofstra posted a .299 hitting percentage during the win, while limiting the Blue Hens to a .114 percentage.
The Pride jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the opening set, and led by at least three points the rest of the way to take the opening frame. Hofstra then took an early 9-3 advantage in the second frame, while the Blue Hens never got closer than six points from there.
Delaware hung tough early in the third set, pulling within 8-7 following a Bellinger ace. However the Pride reeled off the next seven points, and after Delaware used an 11-4 spurt to close within 24-20, Perez slammed a kill to end the match.
“We obviously didn't have the outcome we wanted,” Swann said. “Losing to a team in three sets doesn't sit well with anyone on this team. I think we came out a little off and weren't able to play our game until the third set, which is entirely too late. It's not that we weren't prepared, but we never really got in a good flow as a collective unit. We have to use tomorrow to make sure it doesn't happen again on Monday, and I have confidence that we can do that.”
The Blue Hens return to action on Monday at 4 p.m. when then take on Northeastern at Cabot Gym.
