NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware women's soccer team couldn't hold on to a 2-0 second half lead Sunday afternoon as the College of Charleston scored four goals in the final 32 minutes of the game and posted a 4-2 Colonial Athletic Association victory over the Blue Hens at a blustery Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium.
Playing with high emotions on Senior Day, the Blue Hens (3-12, 2-4) got goals from two seniors to
jump out to the 2-0 lead but couldn't hold on and dropped their fourth straight match. The Hens fell despite outshooting the Cougars by a 15-10 margin.
Charleston (9-5-1, 2-2-1 CAA) snapped a two-game losing streak as Jessica Schifer scored two goals 22 minutes part in the second half and Laura Ortega scored one goal and assisted on another.
Earlier this season Charleston posted one stretch in which it went unbeaten in nine straight games (7-0-2) and outscored opponents 17-1
Delaware, still in the thick of the CAA post-season race with nine points with three games to go, will continue action next Friday at William & Mary and Sunday at Elon. The top six teams advance to the CAA Tournament beginning Oct. 30.
Delaware senior Madison Brosler (at left) got things started for the Hens when her shot was saved by Charleston netminder Bailie Fout but she grabbed the rebound and slipped the shot to the right side of the goal for her third goal of the season.
Fout, who posted five saves and earned the win, was pressed into action when Charleston starter Lauren Killian was injured in pregame warmups.
After taking the 1-0 lead into halftime, the Hens didn't need much time to build on it as senior Natalie Zelenky (at right) collected a loose ball in front of the net and hit the back of the net from 10 yards out just 61 seconds into the stanza for her team-high five goal of the season and a 2-0 Blue Hen lead.
But things went south from there for the Blue Hens. Ali Freitas got Charleston on the board 12:35 into
the half when she collected a pass from Ortega and blasted a shot from 25 yards that hit the top crossbar and bounced down and spinned into the net.
• The four goals tied the most allowed by the Hens this year and were the most allowed by Delaware in a half since then No. 6 Virginia scored four times in the first half of a 6-1 win over Delaware on Aug. 30, 2015
• Zelenky has now scored in five of the last eight games and has 24 career goals, good for No. 7 all-time at Delaware with Brittany Campbell (1999-2002)
