Blue Hens? Winning Streak Snapped With Four-Set Loss at James Madison

HARRISONBURG, Va. -- The University of Delaware volleyball team saw its five-match winning streak come to an end Friday night as the Blue Hens dropped a 3-1 verdict to James Madison at Sinclair Gymnasium.
The Dukes, who won their seventh in a row while improving to 18-10 overall and 10-5 in the Colonial Athletic Association, captured the match by set scores of 25-18, 25-13, 22-25, 25-22. Delaware dropped to 13-15 overall and 7-8 in conference play.
Senior outside hitter Autumn Jenkins led the Blue Hens with 17 kills and 11 digs, as she posted her 16th double-double of the season. Maria Bellinger added 10 kills on the night, while Alexa Swann had nine kills and a team-leading four blocks. Erin Layne dished out 36 assists during the loss, while Taylor Hollingsworth added nine digs.
Janey Goodman paced James Madison with 16 kills, while Bryn Recker and Kate Whitmire added 11 apiece and Taylor Austin made a match-high 26 digs.
The Dukes raced out to a 9-3 advantage and led by at least three the rest of the opening set, while JMU never trailed in the second game to go in front by two sets. Delaware answered back in the third set, winning three straight points to go up 15-13 and holding the lead the rest of the way.
The Blue Hens trailed 10-5 in the fourth set, but stormed back by taking eight of the next nine points to go up 13-11. However the Dukes answered with a 13-6 spurt to take a 24-19 lead, and after three straight UD points brought the Hens within two, Whitmire posted a kill to end the match.
“I'm proud of the way we were able to put the first two sets behind us and fight in the third set and win,” Swann said. “That game should have gone to five, and we're all excited to work hard in the gym next week in case we see JMU in the tournament. I have full confidence that this team is on the path to doing something incredible. Looking forward, we've got to put tonight behind us and be ready to play William & Mary tomorrow on their senior night.”
The Blue Hens close their regular season against the Tribe on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Kaplan Arena.
