NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Down by as much as 26 points midway through the third quarter, Delaware made a thunderous comeback and rode the momentum to tie the game with 2:47 remaining.
The Hens held Detroit Mercy to just four free throws in the fourth quarter, including two with 23 seconds left on the clock as the Titans claimed the 66-64 victory in the final game of the CSUN Thanksgiving Classic Saturday evening at The Matadome.
First half woes thwarted Delaware for the second straight game as Detroit Mercy (3-3) held a 42-23 advantage at halftime and outshot the Hens, 57.1 percent (16-28) to 20.0 percent (8-40) at the break.
The Blue Hens (4-2) outscored the Titans, 20-4, over the final 14:48 of the contest, but Delaware was unable to capitalize in the final minute.
Redshirt junior Sadé Chatman (St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Central) led the Hens with 13 points and 10 rebounds while senior Erika Brown (Paterson, N.J./John F. Kennedy) and sophomore Nicole Enabosi (Gaithersburg, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) each collected 11 points. Enabosi added four steals and two assists in 27 minutes of action.
Haleigh Ristovski guided Detroit Mercy with 20 points, including six 3-pointers, while Rosanna Reynolds notched 13 points and eight rebounds with seven assists.
“We dug ourselves into a such a huge hole in the first half by not bringing the intensity. This group has been great all season so far, but I didn't feel like we had the energy in the first half like we've had in the previous five games. I'm proud that they battled back like crazy, but unfortunately we didn't step out on the floor with the initial intensity that is needed.”
