Delaware Bats Manage Just Six Hits, Hens Fall to Stetson 5-2

Jim Sherman. “Stetson got real good pitching and timely hitting like we did yesterday. Now its the rubber game Sunday and I'm sure our guys really want to win this series. I was happy with our pitching tonight with Walters getting his first collegiate start and throwing pretty well. He's going to be a really good one for us this year and in the future. Our hitting wasn't the best with 15 strikeouts but I expect our hitters to bounce back Sunday.”

Delaware put up a single run in both the second and eighth innings but it wasn't enough to get past the Hatters. In the second, Delaware loaded the bases on a walk to third baseman Diaz Nardo and singles by shortstop James Meeker and designated hitter Doug Trimble before second baseman Jeremy Ake picked up the RBI with a sacrifice fly to centerfield.

In the eighth inning, Delaware scored again after loading the bases, this time with two out. Catcher Nick Tierno singled up the middle with two outs, advanced to second on a single by leftfielder Jordan Glover, moved to third on a walk to Nardo, and scored when Meeker walked with the bases loaded.

Stetson got all the runs it needed in the first three innings by putting up four runs. The Hatters scored twice in the first inning on RBI singles by Cory Reid and John Fussell and went up 4-1 with two more in the third on an RBI double by Will Mackenzie and a sacrifice fly by Jack Machonis.

• Delaware will send junior co-captain Burk FitzPatrick to the mound for Sunday's third game of the series
• Delaware relievers Kyle Hinton, Conner Chasanov, and Zach Flowers combined to pitch 2.2 scoreless innings
• Tierno had two hits for the Hens while Nardo walked three times
