ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The University of Delaware and No. 16 ranked Navy battled for 60 minutes in a defensive struggle Sunday afternoon, but it was the host Midshipmen who came away with a 5-1 victory at Navy-Marine Corps Stadium.
Delaware, (0-3), which lost its third straight game to open the season, managed just a single goal in the third period while Navy (2-1) scored single goals in the first and third periods and put the game away with three fourth-period goals.
Navy jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead on a goal by Matt Rees just 14 seconds into the game, but neither team scored the remainder of the half and the teams went into halftime tied 1-1.
The Blue Hens finally got on the board with 9:45 left in the third quarter and tied the game at 1-1 when junior Trupert Ortlieb scored his first goal of the season and just the third of his career off a feed from senior midfielder Steve DeLargy.
However, the Hens could not muster any more offense the rest of the day. Navy broke the tie on a goal by Kevin Wendel with 1:39 left in third quarter and the Mids tallied three more in the fourth period to pull away. Navy's T.J. Hanzsche scored two of those goals in the final 2:19 to preserve the victory.
Navy outshot Delaware 32-20 and held a 27-13 advantage in groundballs and turned the ball over just 10 times compared to the Hens' 17.
Delaware sophomore goalkeeper Parker Ferrigan, a first-year transfer from Syracuse, put in a solid effort in goal as he recorded 10 saves in his second career start. The five goals allowed by the Hens marked their best defensive effort since a 12-5 victory over Manhattan last season.
The single goal scored by Delaware's was its lowest offensive output since an 8-1 loss to Fairleigh Dickinson in 1969.
