PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – It took a three-set match, but freshman Sara Komer (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) came through in the clutch for Delaware as the Blue Hens defeated Albany, 4-3, Sunday afternoon at UPenn's Hecht Tennis Center.
With the two teams tied at 3-3, Komer picked up the first No. 4 singles set, 6-3, before dropping the second set, 5-7, to Alba Sala. Komer continued her aggressive style of play into the third set and was able to clinch the individual victory with a score of 6-4, to secure the team win, 4-3.
Albany (3-4) opened the afternoon by sweeping doubles play before Delaware (4-1) rallied in singles action.
Freshman Annie Jaskulski (Wilmington, Del./Wilmington Friends) collected the first singles win of the day by defeating Chassidy King, 7-5, 6-2.
Sophomore Amanda Studnicki (Normal, Ill./Normal West) followed with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Dajana Ognjenovic while junior Denny LaMachia (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) came from behind for a 6-7 (2), 6-2, 6-3 win against Paulina Torres.
“This was a very exciting come-from-behind win. This is truly what collegiate tennis is all about. We were not disheartened after losing all three doubles matches. There were so many clutch performances this afternoon and I'm proud of how our ladies played today against a very strong Albany squad.”
