COSTA MESA, Calif. -- The University of Delaware took a one-goal lead into halftime, but Michigan outscored the Blue Hens 5-1 over the first 19 minutes of the second half to post a 10-7 men's lacrosse victory before a crowd of 4,320 at Orange County Winter Invitational Saturday night at Orange Coast College.
Delaware, making its first visit to the state of California in school history, fell short in its bid for its first victory of the season and dropped to 0-4 on the season. Three of the losses have been by four goals or less.
Junior Paul Major and senior Anthony Disanzo each scored two goals for the Blue Hens while freshman Andrew Romagnoli scored a goal and dished out an assist and sophomore goalkeeper Parker Ferrigan made 10 saves for the second straight game.
Michigan improved to 2-2 on the season as Kyle Jackson tallied a game-high four goals, Peter Kraus contributed three goals and an assist, and Decker Curran and Ian King each had a goal and an assist. Goalkeeper Gerald Logan recorded 13 saves. Jackson, the nation's No. 11 leading goal-scorer, increased his season total to 15 while King extended his point-scoring streak to 25 straight games.
Delaware outshot Michigan by a wide 39-27 margin and won the faceoff battle 11-10 but the Hens failed on all five of their extra-man opportunities.
The Blue Hens took a 2-1 lead after one quarter on goals by Major and Disanzo and took a 5-4 advantage into the break when Disanzo and Chris Colaneri each scored in the final 70 seconds of the half.
Michigan took control in the second half as the Wolverines got three straight goals from Jackson, Decker Curren, and Kraus to go up 7-5. A goal by Delaware's John O'Connor cut the deficit to 7-6, but Michigan scored the first two goals of the final quarter to go up 9-6.
Delaware again answered and narrowed the gap to two on a score by Romagnoli with 6:46 left, but Jackson added some insurance for Michigan with a goal with 2:35 remaining to seal the win.
