NEWARK, Del. -- Delaware posted a 9-0 victory over North Carolina A&T before falling to Albany, 6-2, as the Blue Hen softball team opened play at the UD Spring Invitational Friday afternoon.
The Blue Hens (11-6) jumped on the Aggies in their first game of the day by scoring four runs in the bottom of the second inning, all with two outs. UD starting pitcher Kiersten Coffman allowed just one hit and no walks in four innings of work to improve to 7-3 on the year, before Jordan Cargile fired a scoreless fifth. North Carolina A&T pitcher Zadashia Waddell took the loss for the Aggies (8-9) after giving up nine runs on 10 hits.
The Blue Hens' second game of the day was scoreless until the top of the third, when Albany (4-6) pushed across a pair of unearned runs. Mackenzie Clearly drove home the first run on an RBI groundout, while Maggie Cocks then crossed the plate on a wild pitch.
Delaware would answer in the bottom of the fifth, as after the Blue Hens loaded the bases, Carolyn Szymanski scored on a groundout by Gearhart. Nuccio then legged out a bunt single, allowing Hannah George to score the tying run.
However Albany answered back with four runs in the top of the seventh, scoring on a bases loaded walk and a hit by pitch before Elizabeth Snow delivered a two-run single.
