PHILADELPHIA -- Delaware led in most of the statistical categories in the Blue Hens' non-league men's lacrosse matchup at Saint Joseph's Saturday afternoon, but the scoreboard told a different story.
The Blue Hens outshot the host Hawks, had a distinct advantage on groundballs, and the teams were even on faceoffs. But Saint Joseph's broke open a close game by scoring the first three goals of the second half and pulled away for a 12-7 victory at Sweeney Field.
Delaware (3-6), which had a two-game win streak snapped and was playing its third straight road game, had tied the score at 5-5 with 3:55 left in the first half, but Saint Joseph's scored less than a
minute later to take a one-goal lead into intermission and then tallied the first three goals of the second half to take control at 9-5.
Delaware outshot Saint Joseph's 34-31 for the game and held a 29-17 advantage in groundballs. Each team won 11 faceoffs and Delaware had one less turnover than the Hawks. The Hens committed six penalties but Saint Joseph's was only able to capitalize once.
Saint Joseph's (5-2), which entered the game ranked No. 6 in the nation in scoring offense at 13.5
goals per contests, won its second straight game and improved to 4-1 at home this season as Mike Rastivo and Chris Blewitt each recorded hat tricks and Kevin Forster and Hayes McGinley each had two goals and an assist. Goalkeeper T.J. Jones came up big with 14 saves. The Hawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead and were up 5-2 early in the second when a Delaware flurry tied thing up.
Romagnoli scored with 9:37 left in the half and DeLargy tallied just 1:20 later. Romagnoli then scored again at the 3:55 mark to deadlock the game at 5-5 but SJU went into halftime up 6-5 on a goal by Blewitt with 2:03 left.
Rastivo scored twice in the third quarter to push the lead to 9-5 and after Delaware's Anthony Disanzo scored with 1:19 left in the third to narrow the gap to three, Blewitt and Rastivo each scored in a span of 1:20 to pull away.
