NEWARK, Del. – Despite having multiple players down due to illness and/or injury, the Blue Hens fought from behind to capture the 4-3 victory against Saint Joseph's Wednesday afternoon at the Delaware Field House Outdoor Courts.
The Hawks (3-8) garnered two of their wins due to Delaware defaults in No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles.
SJU picked up the team doubles point with a 6-3 decision in the second flight and a Delaware default in the No. 3 spot.
Sophomore Amanda Studnicki (Normal, Ill./Normal West) got the Hens going on the right track with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Claire Minnoe in top flight singles play.
Freshman Annie Jaskulski (Wilmington, Del./Friends) tied the game at 2-2 with her third straight win of the season by defeating Kristina Eisenbrand, 6-3, 6-1, in No. 3 singles.
Draga Sabotic (Okemos, Mich./Okemos) continued the momentum for Delaware (8-3) with her 10th victory of her rookie campaign with a 6-2, 7-5 victory versus Arianne Polatnick in the fifth spot.
Junior Denny LaMachia (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton), visibly hampered by illness the entire afternoon, clinched the team victory in heroic fashion by bouncing back with a 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 decision over Maureen Devlin in No. 2 singles.
“This was an outstanding team effort today especially considering we have multiple players suffering from illness. Denny LaMachia was clutch today. After losing the second set, and practically ready to default because she was feeling so poorly, she was able to battle back like a champ to win the third set and ultimately clinch the team match.”
