NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware softball team opens its Colonial Athletic Association schedule this weekend when the Blue Hens host the College of Charleston in a three-game series at the UD Softball Stadium.
The Blue Hens and Cougars will play a single game on Friday beginning at 3 p.m., while Saturday's doubleheader has been pushed back an hour and will now start at 11 a.m.
Delaware split a low-scoring doubleheader with Monmouth on Wednesday, dropping the opener, 3-1, before posting a 1-0 victory in the nightcap. Kiersten Coffman fired a three-hit shutout during the second game, as she earned her ninth victory of the season. Alyshia Dellatore scored the lone run of the contest in the bottom of the fifth when she singled and eventually scored on a Monmouth error.
The Blue Hens are 14-10 on the season and are hitting .303 as a team, as six current UD starters are hitting above the .300 mark. Hannah George, who recorded a team-leading three hits during the Monmouth twinbill, is batting .444 on the year, while Mariah Kondravy is hitting .360 with a team-high 16 RBI. Leanna Gearhart leads the team with 28 hits, 18 runs scored and a CAA-best 17 stolen bases, while Anna Steinmetz has belted five homers and driven home 16 runs.
Charleston enters the series with a 19-10 mark and the Cougars have won six consecutive games, including all four during last weekend's CofC Invitational. Rebecca Mueller and Taylor DuPree are each tied for the conference lead with 41 hits, as Mueller is batting .436 with nine doubles and 23 RBI while DuPree is hitting .423 with 23 runs scored. Samantha Martin is 11-4 with a 1.92 ERA in the circle for the Cougars, while Sydney Shipley is 6-4 with a 2.80 ERA.
Charleston leads the all-time series with the Blue Hens, 4-2, as the Cougars have won two of three games from Delaware during each of the last two seasons.
