ELON, N.C. – In the first-ever meeting between the two programs, Delaware fell, 7-0, to host Elon Thursday afternoon at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
The Phoenix (8-9, 3-1 CAA) opened the day strong and did not allow a three-set match in singles action.
Freshman Sarah Hall (West Orange, N.J./Mount Saint Dominic Academy) nearly pulled off the victory in No. 5 singles but eventually dropped the 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) contest to Kirsten Ward.
Classmates Sara Komer (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) and Draga Sabotic (Okemos, Mich./Okemos) also had close matches for the Blue Hens (8-5, 0-3 CAA). In the fourth flight, Suzanne Zenoni defeated Komer, 6-3, 6-3, while Taylor Casey downed Sabotic, 6-4, 6-2 in the fifth spot.
Elon entered doubles play ahead by a tally of 6-0 and continued its good fate by sweeping the match by scores of 6-3, 6-2 and 6-4.
“We competed hard today against a very strong Elon team. We're thankful the weather held up so we could get this crucial conference match completed. It is always beneficial to be able to play outdoors, especially versus a tough opponent.”
