LAST TIME OUT
The up-tempo attack of Villanova University was too much for the University of Delaware Saturday afternoon as the Blue Hens fell to the No. 14 ranked Wildcats 23-13 at Delaware Stadium. Villanova (3-1), which won its third straight game, jumped out to a 8-0 lead in the opening quarter and peppered the Blue Hens with 61 shots for the game to pick up the win. Junior Paul Major scored three goals to lead the Blue Hens. One positive note for the Blue Hens was its success on faceoffs. Going up against a Villanova team that entered the game ranked No. 1 in the nation with a 75 percent success rate, Delaware won 22 of 38 attempts (57.9 percent) with freshman Jake Hervada winning 16 of 25 and junior Sam Walsh winning 6 of 12.
HEN SCRATCHINGS
• Delaware will continue with road games at Binghamton, Saint Joseph's, and Rutgers before returning home for its Colonial Athletic Association opener Apr. 2 vs. Massachusetts
• Delaware redshirt freshman Andrew Romagnoli, who scored six goals in Delaware's 14-6 win ove VMI last Tuesday, shared this week's CAA Rookie of the Week award
• Delaware is led offensively by junior Paul Major (10 goals, 7 assists), Romagnoli (8-3), and Steve DeLargy (4-2)
• The Hens won 22 of 38 faceoff attempts vs. Villanova and as a team have won 52.8 percent of their tries to rank No. 3 in the CAA. Individually, Hervada is No. 3 in the CAA (.567) and Walsh is No. 4 (.544)
• Delaware leads the CAA and ranks No. 17 in the NCAA in caused turnovers (8.17) led by freshman Austin Haynes, who leads the CAA with 1.8 per game.
SERIES INFORMATION
Delaware leads 5-0 with an average win margin of 7.6 goals per game. The Hens have posted wins of 18-8 in 2003, 9-8 in 2005, 20-5 in 2007, 10-5 in 2014, and 12-5 last season at Delaware Stadium. In last year's game, Delaware jumped on Manhattan early with 10 first half goals and cruised to the victory. Beau Jones scored a career-high four goals for Delaware while Tom Holland added three scores. The Hens are 1-0 all-time here at Gaelic Park with the 10-5 win in 2014.
• Drew Kelleher (Vermont '09) is in his first season as Manhattan's head men's lacrosse coach. Prior to his arrival in Riverdale, he was the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Boston University for two seasons.
ABOUT MANHATTAN
Manhattan, a member of the MAAC Conference, enters today's game winless (0-5) and coming off a 16-4 setback to Hartford in its home opener Saturday. The Jaspers have also lost to Bryant (16-3), Wagner (15-8), Robert Morris (19-6), and Saint Joseph's (16-9) to start the season. The Jaspers, who have lost nine straight games dating back to last season, are led by Peter Giarratano (9 goals, 6 assists) and Matt Garvey (6 goals, 4 assists)
