The University of Delaware baseball squad will be looking to knock off Big 10 contender Maryland for the second time in a week today as the Blue Hens meet the Terrapins at Harford County Community College in Bel Air, Md. Delaware defeated Maryland 12-7 back on Mar. 1 at Bob Hannah Stadium behind a 16-hit attack. The Hens are quite familiar with the field as they played their first 14 home games of the 2014 season there while Bob Hannah Stadium was being renovated. Delaware went 7-7 during that stretch, including a 5-2 loss to Maryland.
LAST TIME OUT
Delaware got quality starts in each of its two games during the final day of the UD Bob Hannah Invitational, but the Hens had to settle for a split as they knocked off downstate foe Delaware State 4-2 Sunday afternoon after falling to UMass Lowell 5-3 in the opener. The Blue Hens (6-4) went 2-1 during the two-day tournament thanks to a 4-2 win over UMass Lowell on Saturday afternoon. In three games during the weekend, Delaware starting pitchers went 19 innings, allowed just 10 hits, two earned runs, and seven walks while striking out 21 batters.
HEN SCRATCHINGS
• Delaware will return to Bob Hannah Stadium this weekend to host Binghamton for four non-league games beginning on Friday, March 11 at 2:30 p.m. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday and a single game Sunday.
• Delaware freshman RHP Cole Benjamin will get his first career start today just 22 miles from his hometown of Rising Sun, Md. where he was a star at Rising Sun High School. He allowed one unearned run and one hit in one inning of relief in his collegiate debut Feb. 28 vs. Old Dominion.
• Delaware is led offensively by IF Austin Niggebrugge (.444, 1 RBI), CF Kevin Mohollen (.390, 1 HR, 4 RBI), and LF Jordan Glover (.368, 10 RBI).
• Delaware ranks No. 3 in the CAA in team batting (.276) and No. 5 in team pitching (4.76 ERA) with Mohollen and Glover No. 7 and No. 10 respectively in batting average.
SERIES INFORMATION
Maryland leads 21-13-1 with four wins in the last five meetings. The teams first met in 1911 and have played every season since 2008 except 2013.
• John Szefc (Drexel '89) is in his fourth season at the helm of the Terrapins and is 117-77 overall. He has led Maryland to the NCAA Super Regionals in both 2014 and 2015.
ABOUT MARYLAND
Maryland, which has advanced to the NCAA Tournament Super Regionals in each of the last two years, was picked second in this year's Big Ten Preseason Poll. Maryland (5-5) is coming off a 4-3 loss at No. 16 East Carolina Sunday. Freshman Nick Dunn reached base three times and had two RBI. The Terrapins own wins over Alabama, Rhode Island, Tennessee, and SE Louisiana this season. Dunn leads the team with a .417 batting average.
