Blue Hen Shortstop Leanna Gearhart Named CAA Softball Player of the Week

RICHMOND, Va. -- University of Delaware sophomore shortstop Leanna Gearhart was named the Colonial Athletic Association Softball Player of the Week on Monday.
Gearhart (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) batted .400 during the Blue Hens' five games last week, leading the team with 12 runs scored, 10 stolen bases and four walks. She scored two runs and stole three bases in Wednesday's 8-7 win over Delaware State, and added two hits, three runs scored and three steals in the 9-3 victory over the Hornets in the nightcap.
Gearhart finished 1 for 2 with two runs scored in Saturday's 4-3 loss at UNCW, before contributing an RBI double and scoring three times in the 10-0 triumph over the Seahawks. She finished the week with two hits and two runs scored during the 5-1 win at UNCW on Sunday.
Gearhart has started at shortstop during all 37 games this season, batting .357 with a team-high 46 hits. She leads the CAA with 40 runs scored, which ties the UD single season record set last year by Jessica Grisler. Gearhart also leads the league with 35 stolen bases, tied for fourth in Division I and 17 more than any other player in the conference.
She has posted a CAA-best five triples, tied for sixth most in the country, and has scored a run in 13 consecutive games. Additionally Gearhart has stolen 18 straight bases without getting caught, establishing a new school record.
Gearhart and the Blue Hens return home this weekend to host Hofstra in a three-game conference series at the UD Softball Stadium.
