GREENSBORO, N.C. – The University of Delaware men's tennis squad closed out its season Friday morning with a 4-0 loss to UNCW in the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament Quarterfinals, held at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center due to weather concerns.
The Seahawks (11-8), who are the No. 1 seed in the tournament and ranked No. 67 in the nation, opened an early lead in singles action over the eighth-seeded Blue Hens and never looked back.
Senior Mike Furr (Kennett Square, Pa./Unionville) concluded his four-year career in a Delaware uniform with a 6-1, 6-0 loss to No. 120 Santtu Leskinen, the 2016 CAA Men's Tennis Player of the Year, in top flight play.
In No. 2 singles, junior Tyler Flematti (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) fell by the same score to Christiaan Van der Burgh.
Freshmen Venkatesh Ramkumar (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) and Blaise Casselbury (Lititz, Pa./Lancaster Country Day School) rounded out play in the third and fourth flights.
Ramkumar put the pressure on Agustin Savarino in the third slot by eventually fell by a score of 6-4, 6-2.
Bruce Myers“This was a tough one today. Moving indoors didn't help us, but there is a reason they [UNCW] are a nationally-ranked team. Blaise [Casselbury] and Venk [Ramkumar] played their best matches of the season, but unfortunately just came up short. Today's match really gives me a good idea of where we need to be in order to compete in the CAA.”
