Jim Sherman. “We were a hit away and a couple base runners away from being right back in a 5-2 game, but they put that four spot up in the eighth and put the game away. That is whey they (UNCW) are who they are and that is where we are right now. They come in and shut you down on the backend, they have power, and they have speed.”Friday's doubleheader will begin at 12 noon with the second game slated for approximately 3:30 p.m. Prior to the opener, Delaware will honor senior designated hitter Nick Liggett as part of Senior Day.
UNCW (36-13, 15-5 CAA), which snapped a three-game losing streak, scored two runs in the first inning and upped the lead to 3-1 in the top of the fifth. The Hens finally got on the board in the bottom of the fifth as Nick Patten led off with a double and scored on a fielder's choice by Kevin Mohollen. The Seahawks came right back with a run in the sixth but Delaware answered again as Jordan Glover launched a one-out home run to left field to cut the margin to 4-2. The rest of the day belonged to UNCW.
Delaware starter Ron Marinaccio (7-4) took the loss despite striking out seven batters in 6.2 innings. UNCW starter Ryan Foster improved to 12-1 with his seventh straight win as he allowed just five hits and one earned run over seven innings.
Glover finished with a team-high two hits and also stole his team-leading 22nd base of the season for the Hens.
