Bonnie Kenny has announced that seniors Taylor Hollingsworth and Alexa Swann will serve as team captains for the Blue Hens during the 2016 season.
Hollingsworth, a defensive specialist/libero from Wilmington, Del. (Ursuline Academy), appeared in all 113 sets while making 12 starts last year, when she ranked third on the Blue Hens with 256 digs and fourth with 21 service aces. She reached double figure digs in 10 matches during the campaign, including a season-high 18 digs in a five-set victory over Elon. A three-year letterwinner, Hollingsworth has posted 1,013 digs, 84 assists and 48 aces during her UD career.
Swann, a middle blocker from Mertztown, Pa. (Brandywine Heights), ranked fourth in the CAA with 1.13 blocks per set and eighth with a .292 hitting percentage in 2015, when she started all 29 matches for the Blue Hens. She was third on the squad with 246 kills, including a career-high 19 at Charleston, and led UD with 128 blocks. Swann has recorded 495 kills and 259 blocks during her first two years at Delaware, and is currently the school's career leader by averaging 1.13 blocks per set.
Hollingsworth and Swann were both named to the National College Athlete Honor Society last year, while Swann represented the Blue Hens on the CAA All-Academic Team.
“Taylor and Alexa are the epitome of what it means to be a student-athlete, both on the court and in the community,” Kenny said. “They are really good people, excellent students, and very good volleyball players. They both value the privilege of being a captain, and are appreciative of their teammates voting them captains for this season.”
The Blue Hens, who officially began practice for the 2016 campaign last week, open their regular season on Aug. 26 against Coppin State on the first day of the Navy Kristen Dickmann Invitational.
