Martin Ingelsby has announced that Derrick Woods has joined the program as a transfer from St. Bonaventure.
Woods, a 6-8 forward from Trenton, N.J., will sit out the upcoming year and have three years of eligibility remaining beginning in the 2017-18 season.
Woods appeared in all but one game while making 22 starts during his freshman season with the Bonnies, averaging 3.5 points and 2.4 rebounds per contest. He shot 56.8 percent (42 of 74) from the field, posted a 71.0 free throw percentage, and blocked 17 shots while playing 13.1 minutes per game.
Woods scored a season-high 11 points on 5 of 6 shooting from the field during a win over Davidson on Jan. 2, and added nine points while playing a season-high 30 minutes in a victory at Canisius on Nov. 24. He collected a season-best five rebounds in four games for the Bonnies, who finished 22-9, tied for first place in the Atlantic 10 with a 14-4 league mark, and earned a bid to the Postseason NIT.
Woods garnered second team Pennsylvania AAAA All-State honors as a senior at Pennsbury High School, when he averaged 16.0 points, 10.0 rebounds and 3.0 blocked shots per game. He helped lead the Falcons to a 25-7 record and to the AAAA state quarterfinals in 2015.
“We are very excited to add a player of Derrick's caliber to our basketball program,” Ingelsby said. “He brings great size and athleticism to our frontcourt, and his overall skill set will only flourish in our system.”
