NEWARK, Del. – Senior Guillermo Delgado (Tres Cantos, Spain/Jose Luis Sampedro) gave the Hens the 1-0 lead within the first two minutes of the game, but Villanova held No. 22 Delaware scoreless over the next 88 minutes en route to a 2-1 victory at Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium.
The loss marks the first for the Blue Hens this season as Delaware (4-1) gave up a goal for the first time in 452:02 minutes, dating to the first half of last season's CAA championship game at Hofstra.
Just 1:16 into the contest, Delgado received a pass from classmate Dani Laguna (Tres Cantos, Spain/Jorge Manrique) less than five yards in front of the goal before knocking it in to the lower left corner of the net.
With the goal, Delgado is now just four points (41g, 13a) away from tying Mike Biggs' school-record 99 (47g, 5a) set from 1968-70.
Padraic McCullaugh broke UD's scoreless streak with a tally in the 48th minute. Miguel Polley and Lucas Hodges connected in the 62nd minute with the game-winner for the Wildcats, who improved to 3-2 on the year.
Redshirt sophomore goalie Todd Morton (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) tied a season-high with four saves and 11 shots faced.
Will Steiner was credited with the win for Villanova after collected seven saves with one goal allowed.
“I thought today's game was a great college game. It was very even; Villanova's a very good team. We both had opportunities to score, but finishing is the name of the game here. Some games you start slow and others you manage to get out of the gates quickly and certainly today was the opposite of when we played Iona.”
