Scott Grzenda. “Kailyn (Rekos) was a monster (in goal) and the team fed off her energy. Right now we are 0-0 coming into conference play. The girls will be ready for Northeastern.”Rekos notched a season-high 12 saves and senior Natalie Zelenky scored for the second straight game for the Blue Hens but it wasn't enough as Stony Brook scored with 50 seconds left in regulation before tallying the game-winner 1:53 into the second overtime period.
Delaware (1-8) lost its third straight game while Stony Brook (2-5-2) snapped a three-game winless streak.
Earlier this season, Delaware fell to Saint Joseph's 2-1 when the Hawks scored with just 28 seconds left in overtime. Just a few days later, Princeton scored a goal with just five seconds left in regulation to tie the score and send the game into extra time. Two minute into the second overtime, Princeton scored to emerge victorious.
After a scoreless first half, Delaware got on the board 24 minutes into the second half when Zelenky gathered in a rebound off a free kick and scored to give the Hens a 1-0 lead.
Delaware appeared to have the game in hand as the final minute approached but Stony Brook's dashed those hopes when Christen Cahill took a rebound and scored from six yards out past Rekos with just 50 seconds left in regulation.
Neither team scored in the first overtime possession but Stony Brook wasted little time in the final frame as Amy Thompson took a feed from Cahill and Julie Johnstonbaugh and scored the game winner just 1:53 into the period to clinch the win.
HEN SCRATCHINGS:
• Delaware still leads the series by a 4-3 margin over Stony Brook. The teams faced each other for the first time since a 3-0 Delaware win at the 2011 James Madison Invitational
• Zelenky upped her career goal total to 21 to take over sole possession of eighth place on the all-time UD and just three shy of the No. 7 spot held by Brittany Campbell (24 goals in 1999-0)
• Delaware will close its regular season with nine consecutive CAA games, including home contests vs. Northeastern next Friday and Hofstra next Sunday.
