NEWARK, Del. - A mere five seconds was all that separated the University of Delaware women's soccer team from its first victory of the young season.
Instead, there was only heartbreak once again.
The Blue Hens were holding tight to a 1-0 lead late in Friday's nights matchup with defending Ivy League champion Princeton, the third-ranked team in the region.
But the Tigers scored with just five seconds left in regulation and then tallied the game-winner two minutes into the second overtime period to escape Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium with a 2-1 victory and remain undefeated at 3-0.
For the winless Blue Hens (0-5), it was nothing but disappointment for the second time in a week. Last Sunday, Delaware fell to Saint Joseph's 2-1 in overtime when the Hawks scored with just 28 seconds left in the extra frame.
Scott GrzendaAfter a scoreless first half, Delaware finally broke the stalemate when junior midfielder Krista Trinidad took a feed from All-Colonial Athletic Association forward Natalie Zelenky and scored with 5:06 left in regulation. Zelenky had dribbled to her right and sent a pass back to her left to Trinidad, who scored from 12 yards out on the left side.
The Hens appeared to have the game locked up in the final minute but Princeton gained possession and with five seconds left on the clock Vanessa Gregoire blasted a shot from 25 yards out into the top left corner of the net past UD goalkeeper Kailyn Rekos.
The teams played a scoreless 10-minute overtime to set the stage for the game-winner in the second overtime period. It didn't take long as Princeton tallied just 2:03 into the stanza when Tyler Lussi scored from 10 yards out on the left side off a pass from Gregoire.
"Give Princeton credit," said Grzenda. "They did what they needed to do to win. But if we continue to play like this, we'll win a lot games." HEN SCRATCHINGS:
• Trinidad scored her first goal of the season and the fourth of her career
• Princeton held a 22-9 advantage in shots but Delaware led in corner kicks 5-3
• Rekos recorded a career-high 10 saves for Delaware
• Delaware has started the season 0-5 for the first time in school history
• The Hens complete the busy weekend Sunday night when they host Loyola (Md.) at 7 p.m. at Grant Stadium
