TOWSON, Md. – Brian Starr and John Davis each scored 18 points as Towson pulled away late for an 83-56 Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball victory over Delaware Thursday night at SECU Arena.
The Tigers, who snapped a four-game losing streak, improved to 9-9 overall and 1-4 in the conference. The Blue Hens dropped their fifth in a row, falling to 7-11 overall and 0-5 in league play.
Starr and Davis each reached their season-high in points for Towson, while William Adala Moto posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Towson shot 52.5 percent from the field and controlled the boards with a 42-26 advantage over the Blue Hens.
UD freshman Ryan Daly again led the way for Delaware with 17 points, reaching double figures for the ninth time in 10 games. Anthony Mosley, Devonne Pinkard and Skye Johnson each chipped in with eight points, with Johnson snaring a team-best six boards.
However Delaware shot just 41.5 percent from the floor, and hurt itself by hitting just 5 of 14 free throw attempts.
“I thought we got off to a good start offensively, and were in a pretty good rhythm,” said first-year Blue Hen head coach Martin Ingelsby. “We were in a decent position at halftime down just eight, but the wheels fell off in the second half. We left some opportunities at the foul line, and you can't do that against a good team like Towson. I thought we competed in the first half, but it got away from us in the second.”
Delaware jumped out to an 11-4 lead in the opening five minutes, but Towson answered with a 13-2 run and led the rest of the night. The Tigers scored nine straight points to take a 26-16 advantage, and after leading by as many as 11, carried a 36-28 margin into the halftime break.
Towson then opened the second half on 9-2 run, going up 45-30 on a Mike Morsell dunk and forcing a Delaware time out with 17:05 to play.
Pinkard responded with consecutive three-pointers for the Blue Hens, and Delaware was still down just nine at 55-46 with 10:66 left after a Cazmon Hayes three-pointer. However Towson answered with a decisive 21-3 run to pull away.
