Delaware (0-4) opened the scoring against St. John's during the bottom of the second inning when Devon Steiner led off with a single to left and eventually scored on a two-out infield single by Miranda O'Donald. Alyshia Dellatore then led off the bottom of the third by drilling a home run to centerfield, her second career homer.
St. John's (1-1), which was picked to win the Big East Conference, was limited to just two hits through the first three innings by Blue Hen starter Kat Morris before pulling even in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs Savannah Warren and Monique Landini each singled, before Kaitlin Mattera ripped a two-run double to knot the game at 2-2.
Kaitlyn Wilkens belted a three-run homer off UD reliever Jordan Cargile in the top of the sixth to put St. John's up for good, before the Red Storm added three in the seventh on an RBI triple by Gretchen Bowie and a two-run single by Warren.
Dellatore and Steiner each finished with two hits for Delaware while Mariah Kondravy, Anna Steinmetz, Emily Neal and O'Donald added one apiece.
Illinois State (1-3) then jumped on Blue Hen pitcher Maddi Marsh for eight runs in the top of the first inning, but Delaware answered back in the bottom half with a pair of runs on RBI singles by Steiner and Giovanna Kolofer. UD then erupted for seven runs during the bottom of the third to take a 9-8 lead. Mattie Nuccio and O'Donald delivered run-scoring singles during the rally, and after a sacrifice fly by Dellatore drove home another, Kondravy smacked an RBI double to score Leanna Gearhart with the go-ahead run.
However the Redbirds immediately took the lead back in the top of the fourth inning when Alyssa Weibel hit a two-run homer, and after Illinois State tacked on three insurance runs in the fifth, the Redbirds added six more in the seventh.
Delaware scored four times in the bottom of the frame, as two runners crossed the plate when Kondravy reached on an error before Steinmetz belted a two-run homer.
Kondravy and Steinmetz both had three hits for the Blue Hens while Kolofer, Neal and O'Donald each added a pair.
The Blue Hens return to action on Sunday when they face fourth-ranked Florida at 1:45 p.m.
